Eskimo Graphic Art

October 7, 1962 - October 27, 1962

This exhibition presents prints done by the Eskimos living on Cape Dorset, on south-western Baffin Island. The sculpture done by these people is well-known but their prints, of more recent origin, are just beginning to be shown abroad. There are two chief techniques employed, the stonecut and the sealskin stencil. The Canadian Department of Northern Affairs has encouraged the Eskimo practice of these art forms. This exhibition has been organized by Eskimo Art Inc. and is being circulated in the United States by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.
