Bird Watching: Audubon and Ornithology in Early America
September 14, 2017 - February 4, 2018
Gladys Brooks Foundation Gallery, Gourley Gallery
Featuring the extraordinary Bien Edition of The Birds of America (1858–60) by John James Audubon, Bird Watching: Audubon and Ornithology in Early America reveals the mind of a nineteenth-century artist and ornithologist at work. Audubon’s animated and hyperrealistic illustrations of birds in their natural habitats bring the world of aviary to life. Exhibiting a selection of early American ornithological texts and images on loan from Dr. and Mrs. Gerald Dorros, Bird Watching explores the artistic and scientific context that informed Audubon’s endeavor to catalog the birds of America.
