The Lunder Collection

In 2013, the inauguration of the Alfond-Lunder Family Pavilion announces the arrival of the Lunder Collection—more than 500 works of American art from the 19th century to 21st century given by Peter and Paula Lunder. Highlights from the collection include works by James McNeill Whistler, Winslow Homer, Georgia O’Keeffe, Alexander Calder, Kiki Smith, Donald Judd, Deborah Butterfield, John Chamberlain and Maya Lin. Central to the collection are more than 300 works by James McNeill Whistler, the largest grouping of Whistler works in an academic museum. The Lunder collection also is comprised of the Lunder-Colville Chinese Art Collection.

Longtime supporters of Colby College, the Lunders have generously endowed two curatorial positions and a fellowship. In 2011, the Lunders were instrumental in founding the Lunder Consortium for Whistler Studies, which links the Colby College Museum of Art, the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery in Washington, D.C., the University of Glasgow, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

PLEASE NOTE: Not all works in the Colby Museum collection are on view at any given time. If you have a question about works on view, please call 207-859-5600 prior to visiting.
