Designed by Frederick Fisher and Partners Architects, Los Angeles, the 26,000-square-foot Alfond-Lunder Family Pavilion opened in 2013. Refined and minimalist in design, the three-story glass pavilion completes a circuit with four existing wings of the Museum, at once unifying them and contrasting with the Georgian brick architecture that is found elsewhere throughout Colby’s campus. The pavilion provides a new light-filled entrance, expansive lobby, and an additional 10,000 square feet of exhibition space, making the Colby Museum of Art the largest art museum in the state of Maine.
The inauguration of the Alfond-Lunder Family Pavilion in 2013 announced that the Museum is a place where risks are taken and experimentation is encouraged. The architectural design renders certain interior spaces—museum offices and art studios—transparent: a transparency that fosters reflection on the work that takes place in both the presentation and creation of artworks.
