Join the Center for Small Town Jewish Life and the Colby College Museum of Art for a special Shabbat dinner and guided exploration of the art and life of artist Louise Nevelson.

Louise Nevelson, born Leah Berliawsky, moved from Ukraine to Rockland, Maine, as child where her family belonged to Adas Yoshuron Synagogue. Nevelson was a sculptor and print-maker most known for her monochromatic wooden pieces.

The evening will include an exploration of Nevelson’s place in Maine’s Jewish history and engage with her work as a point of departure for exploring big ideas and questions. This is a free program, but registration is required. Please register here.

Schedule:

6–7 p.m. Dinner and Candle Lighting in the Colby Museum Lobby

7–8 p.m. Guided conversations on Jewish and eternal themes in the galleries

8–9 p.m. (Optional) Kabbalat Shabbat service in the Bixler Art and Music Center

The World Outside: Louise Nevelson at Midcentury is on view at the Colby College Museum of Art from February 8 to June 9, 2024. The exhibition is organized by the Amon Carter Museum of American Art.
