Join us for a free screening of Pom Poko (1994, 1h 59m), a Japanese animated fantasy film from Studio Ghibli that follows the playful adventures of tanuki, Japanese magical raccoon dogs who shapeshift. Before the film, hear a few words from Professor of East Asian Studies, Laura Nuffer, about the connection between Japanese Folklore and play.
This screening is inspired by the exhibition Playscape: Contemporary Art from the Colby Museum’s Collection, which is on view through April 22, 2024, at Joan Dignam Schmaltz Gallery of Art at the Paul J. Schupf Art Center, downtown Waterville. Reserve your ticket here.
Frame by Frame is a collaborative program of the Colby College Museum of Art and the Maine Film Center. Film screenings are paired with speakers or programs that connect what we see on the big screen to what happens in the museum.
