Multiple Locations in Waterville

Join Waterville Creates and community partners for our annual Arts in Bloom event, taking place in downtown Waterville on Saturday, May 14. Explore your creativity with free programs scheduled throughout the day. This seasonal event is the perfect way to celebrate spring with friends and family!

9 a.m. Spring Story Walk with the Waterville Public Library

Start your day with a crisp walk on the North Street Community Connector Trail. Liz Davis will lead this event reading from the Story Walk panels of Busy Spring: Nature Wakes Up by Sean Taylor and Alex Moss. Local artist and naturalist Serena Sanborn will help you to identify the natural wonders spring is bringing along the trail. In the event of inclement weather, the walk will be canceled and the craft will be held on the Library’s front porch.

10 a.m. Screening of The Secret Garden at Railroad Square Cinema

Young Mary Lennox is sent to her uncle’s mansion after she becomes an orphan. Overseen by the austere Mrs. Medlock, Mary doesn’t have much freedom. While secretly exploring the house, she discovers her late aunt’s neglected garden. The garden proves to be a magical place for Mary, the maid’s son Dickon, and Mary’s bitter cousin Colin Craven. Not that you need another reason to see this masterpiece, but did we mention MIFF20 guest Roger Deakins (Karl Struss Legacy Award honoree) directed the cinematography? Named one of the top 50 films to see by age 15 by the British Film Institute, this classic on the big screen should not be missed! (Rated G. 1 hour 41 minutes.)

10 a.m.–12 p.m. Free “Grab and Go” kits for teens and adults available at the Waterville Public Library

Stop by the Waterville Public Library during Library to Go hours and pick up a Mini Canvas Painting Kit. Unleash your creativity and celebrate Arts in Bloom with your very own miniature masterpiece, complete with an easel.

1–3 p.m. Making Cyanotypes with Michel Droge + Sarah Loftus at the Children’s Discovery Museum

This free workshop led by artist Michel Droge and archeologist Sarah Loftus is a perfect pairing of science and art. The cyanotype process uses paper that undergoes a chemical change when exposed to sunlight, resulting in one-of-a-kind prints. Each print will use natural objects like leaves, flowers, and ferns.

1–3 p.m. Planting at the Children’s Discovery Museum

The Children’s Discovery Museum invites you to their lawn for an afternoon of planting. Colorful flower bulbs paired with fragrant herbs will be available to fill raised beds that will bloom in the front of the museum building. Thank you to Girl Scout troop 545, who will prepare the raised beds prior to the event.

1–3 p.m. Free Scoop of Ice Cream from Stone Fox Creamery courtesy of Colby College Museum of Art at the Children’s Discovery Museum

Enjoy a scoop of delicious homemade Maine ice cream from Stone Fox Farm Creamery, courtesy of the Colby Museum, and pick up a watercolor art kit, perfect for painting your favorite springtime blossoms.
