Come join Lunder Institute Residential Fellow Veronica A. Perez in a braiding circle to braid and share. Perez’s work focuses on identity, experience, and existence. This workshop will guide participants in braiding a three strand braid, while discussing lived experiences of identity, hair, and race. Perez will add the workshop participants’ braids to in-process sculptures, which will be on display on the ground floor of Greene Block + Studios for the duration of the workshop series.
In addition to the workshop, BIPOC participants are invited to have their personal stories recorded and encapsulated in an ongoing sculpture series by Perez. The workshop is free and open to the public.
All braiding circles workshops are free and open to the Colby community. All will take place at Greene Block + Studios, 18 Main St. Waterville, ME, 04901 from 4–6 p.m..
February 9th – Open Mic
Bring a poem, writing from you or someone else focusing on community care and interdependency. Braiding will take place while others are reading, followed by discussion.
February 16th – Pelo Malo Film Screening
Braid while watching the movie Pelo Malo and talking about the themes found in the film such as race relations, identity, and the experience of the self through hair.
February 23rd – Discussion: Collaboration and Community Building
Perez will be joined by collaborators (TBA) to discuss their work building community on and off campus at Colby.
