Head of Falls, Downtown Waterville

The Colby College Museum of Art is joining forces with Waterville Creates and the Waterville Public Library for the 2021 season of Art in the Park. Designed to foster creativity and community among residents and visitors to Waterville, Art in the Park is a free program that takes place at Head of Falls each Thursday during the Farmers’ Market. Program guests will include artists, musicians, live cats, teachers, and scientists.

The National Garden Bureau has announced 2021 as the year of the sunflower. Waterville Creates, in collaboration with a volunteer core led by garden enthusiasts Margy Burns Knight and Steve Knight, together with community partners at the Waterville Public Library, City of Waterville, Alfond Youth Community Center, Children’s Discovery Museum, Waterville Farmers’ Market, the Messalonskee Stream Trail, and the Colby College Museum of Art, are planning to launch the Sunflower House Project, a community-wide initiative.

Designed to engage novice gardeners to experienced horticulturists, the Sunflower Project will take place in designated locations throughout Waterville where “sunflower houses” will be sowed into the ground to create outdoor floral “rooms” for community members and visitors to enjoy. Sunflower Houses are currently planned at the River Walk, Railroad Square Cinema, Alfond Youth & Community Center, the Children’s Discovery Museum, the Colby College Museum of Art, and the Arts Collaborative at 18 Main.

This week participants will begin to design and decorate Summer Art Journals, which we will add to in the coming weeks. If you are not able to attend for the first week, no worries! You can make a journal any week at Art in the Park. In addition, each week a pre-selected book will be read aloud to participants as they construct and design their art journals. This week, the book will be The Sunflower House by Eve Bunting, illustrated by Kathryn Hewitt. Bring a blanket or chair to get comfortable while listening and creating content for your journal.

This program is free and open to all ages and levels of experience. We will reschedule or cancel in the event of rain.
