Art Kits for All: The Winter Solstice Luminary Project

Thursday, December 17, 2020,

Waterville Public Schools

The Winter Solstice Luminary Project will expand and amplify the Art Kits program across Waterville, literally lighting up the city by providing luminary kits to approximately 1,600 students enrolled in the Waterville Public Schools. These kits will be distributed to area schools on Thursday, December 17 and will include materials for two luminaries per kit, along with battery-operated candles. Students and their families are encouraged to place the crafted luminaries at their homes and businesses throughout the city on December 21 to collectively celebrate the winter solstice. For more instructions on creating your luminary, please visit the Waterville Creates YouTube channel on or after December 15!

Art Kits for All is a collaborative project, with many local nonprofits providing manpower and supplies including Waterville Creates!, the Colby College Museum of Art, the Kennebec Montessori School, Waterville Public Schools, and the Family Violence Project. The Art Kits are assembled while wearing masks, art materials are sanitized, and the kits are prepared a week prior to the distribution date to further minimize any transmission risk.
