Recent Acquisitions: October 2015

The Museum is pleased to announce a selection of its recent acquisitions. In conjunction with the commission and installation of Peter Soriano’s conceptual wall drawing Permanent Maintenance, currently on view in the William D. Adams Lobby Gallery, the artist donated six drawings from his “Colby” series and one preparatory drawings for the work. We continue to grow our rich collection of works by Alex Katz, who gifted two paintings, Art School (c. 1950) and Split 4 (2014). We have also added to our collection of American modernism through two strong works; from the Alex Katz Foundation, we received an early landscape painting by Marsden Hartley, Late Fall, Maine (1908) and from Audrey M. and Carlton D. Leaf ’52, we were gifted a watercolor by Andrew Wyeth, the haunting Door to the Sea (1953). A set of eighteen archival pigment prints by photographer Kristin Capp documenting her travels across Brazil, a gift from Daniel and Kerry Tomson given in honor Colby President David Greene, joins our photography collection as well. We extend our gratitude to Gabriella De Ferrari, Arlette and Gus Kayafas, George Kenney, Leena and Sheldon Peck, Terry Winters, and the National Academy Museum for their recent gifts as well, all of which enrich the teaching and research capabilities of the Colby College Museum of Art.

PLEASE NOTE: Not all works in the Colby Museum collection are on view at any given time. If you have a question about works on view, please call 207-859-5600 prior to visiting.
