Noontime Art Talk by Ramey Mize, Anne Lunder Leland Curatorial Fellow
In the gouache Evening on the Beach, 1871, and the oil painting of the same name, Winslow Homer meticulously renders the unwieldy intersection of nineteenth-century women’s clothing and sun, surf, and sand. These two works suggest the artist’s investigation of the nineteenth-century struggle to remain composed and even fully dressed when exposed to the elements. This noontime art talk will address issues of clothing, gender, nineteenth-century coastal paintings, and Homer’s engagement with fashion.
